Heat / High Temperatures - Safety Tips
The Ocean City Fire Department is reaching out to citizens and visitors with general heat / high temperature safety tips. As temperatures begin to stay in the low to high 90’s, there are several things you should do to keep your family safe:
Ø Drink Plenty of Fluids - Increase your fluid intake regardless of activity level. Avoid very cold beverages to prevent stomach cramps, and avoid alcoholic drinks which will actually cause you to lose more fluid.
Ø Wear Appropriate Clothing and Sunscreen – Choose lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. A variety of sunscreens are available to reduce the risk of sunburn.
Ø Slow down - Strenuous activities should be reduced, eliminated, or rescheduled to the coolest time of the day.
Ø Warning signs of a Heat Emerg
ency vary, but may include:
-Heavy sweating
-Muscle cramps
-Weakness
-Headache / dizziness
-Nausea / Vomiting
-Pale skin
These could be signs of a life-threatening emergency. Call 911 immediately. Should you have any questions about fluid intake or your personal health circumstances please contact your primary care physician.
