50th Year of Cadets Comes to a Close. - Ocean City, MD

Friday, October 30, 2015
The month of May marks the end of the 50th year of meetings and drills for the Cadet Program! The program does not hold meetings or drills during the summer months, but will resume on the first Monday in October. This year culminated with three major events held over the course of the past two weeks. Cadet elections and Speed Drills were held on the evening of Monday, May 9, at Headquarters. Cadets elected their administrative officers for the 2011-2012 year, and held their final regular business meeting. Following the meeting, the two teams of Cadets, one led by Lt. Timmy Jerscheid, and the other led by Lt. Charlie Travers, competed against each other in three separate, timed events. The first event was a timed building fire scenario, in which teams were required to establish a water supply, ladder the building and hoist two tools, conduct a primary search, and place a handline in service. The event tested the Cadets knowledge of communication, basic water supply operations, ropes and knots, ladders, SCBA familiarization and use, basic hand line advancement, and proper methods of conducting a search. The second event was a timed Rescue / Salvage based scenario, in which each team was required to function based off of Rescue 7. Teams were required to deploy the tools necessary for basic auto extrication, including Hurst tools, cribbing, and steering wheel covers. They were also required to establish a staging area, set up two sources of scene lighting, demonstrate the proper method for rapid SCBA change-out, and locate and deploy the R.I.T. bag. The final event was a race event, in which teams competed side-by-side to make a connection to a hydrant, and use that hose line to knock a ball off of a cone. The official close of the Cadet year came at the Cadet Banquet, which was held on the evening of Monday, May 16th at the Ocean City Marlin Club. Cadets, instructors, and distinguished guests were invited to have dinner, and witness the presenting of awards, promotions, and the swearing in of new officers.
